What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the changes in the genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into another species. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that species are evolving into other species in a gradual and predictable manner.

More recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can cause a population to develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers most evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as increases in muscle mass from diet or exercise cannot be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not inherited by the next generation.

Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial even though it has been proven accurate by thousands of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. They argue that the concept should not be taught at school. What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism, many of them think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. Publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they would eliminate references to evolution in their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this drive. STR has won its first victory in eliminating examples of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. The next step is to eliminate excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research and also on human evolution.

STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and members. Its goal is to weed out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of the newest biology teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The root causes are unclear however, they could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists across the United States.

The KACR has achieved many things in the past through lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences with a creationist viewpoint, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor started teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught until today.

On August 7 and 8, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on the subject of creation science at major seminaries.
